Le Berger Belge is the first print in a new series
depicting the
Belgian Shepherd in its homeland.

The subjects for this print are dogs who influenced the breed and the background settings for
these paintings are the places in Belgium where the names of the varieties originated.

Historical information:

The Tervuren is Willy de la Garde Noire, born 1948 out of Groenendael parents.  Willy imprinted himself on the variety and few Tervuren exist today who do not have him attached to their pedigrees.  Born a few years
after WWII, thanks to Willy the Tervuren variety was regenerated in the 1950's.
The background setting is Tervuren Park.

The Groenendael is Tan de l'Infernal, born 1945.  Tan was a large dog who presented himself with a great deal of pride.  He was very elegant and appeared to be totally harmonious.  His head was long without excess, well-chiseled, and his ear was medium sized. He had good pigmentation and an excellent coat.  Tan transmitted this quality to many of his offspring and several great lines were created from him, to which the majority of today's winners belong.  The background setting is the Chateau de Groenendael.

The Malinois is Cesar de l'Assa, born 1953.  Cesar was a robust dog of warm colour with marked overlay and mask.  Many Tervuren also have him as their sire.  The background setting is the Leuven canal, Malines (Mechelen)

The Laeken is Quina-Quarteronne, born 1967 out of a Groenendael and Laeken.  She was the product of an experiment to restore correct Belgian type to the rough haired variety, and awaken interest in this least
numerous of varieties. Her photo was used to illustrate the FCI standard in France for many years.
The background setting is the Royal Palace of Laeken.
