Three Days Lost
In the episode "The Furlough" Sergeant Saunders (Vic Morrow) goes to England on leave for a week, to carry out a promise he made to a squad member that recently died. The man had been saving money to give to a woman running an orphanage, and the Sergeant delivers it. While he is there they are subjected to bombing raids, and he stays to help them clean up after the orphanage is hit. We get to see a very different side of Saunders as he interacts with the children and the young woman who looks after them. He grows very fond of the lady, but unfortunately she is killed in another bombing raid and the relationship is ended before it even begins. In a poignant good-bye he stands at the grave site before heading back to the war, a quiet moment when no guns are firing, no bombs are being dropped, just silence as we are reminded again of the fallout of war and how many lives are ruined.
